Program FAQ's

Q: Who is Tree Canada and what does Tree Canada do?
A: Tree Canada is a not-for-profit charitable organization established to encourage Canadians to plant and care for trees in urban and rural environments. A winner of the Canadian Environmental Award (2007), Tree Canada engages Canadian companies, government agencies and individuals to support the planting of trees, the greening of schoolyards, and other efforts to sensitize Canadians to the benefits of planting and maintaining trees. To date, more than 76 million trees have been planted, more than 450 schoolyards have been greened, and Tree Canada has organized 8 national urban forest conferences. More information about Tree Canada is available at www.treecanada.ca.

Q: How is the MAJESTA brand involved with Tree Canada and the Program?
A: Irving Tissue, through their MAJESTA brand of paper products, has teamed up with Tree Canada, to create a new partnership aimed at delivering a unique tree-planting program to Canadians. MAJESTA household paper products come from woodlands which are 100% third party certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative standard (SFI). Irving Tissue has a strong commitment to planting trees for the future and saw its goals fit perfectly with Tree Canada's mandate.

Q: Where and how many trees will be planted?
A: Our goal is to plant 37,500 trees every spring and summer throughout a number of communities in Canada.

Q: Who will be planting the trees?
A: The program will bring school children, Girl Guides, Scouts and local conservation groups together to plant native trees along shorelines in selected Canadian communities.

Q: What is the intended environmental benefit of the Program?
A:
The existence of trees in shoreline locations plays a critical role in river and stream ecology. In addition to promoting diversity of land and aquatic plants and animals, this type of vegetation also helps improve the quality of waterways by reducing temperatures, and by filtering out pesticides and other chemicals that may otherwise come into contact with the water.

Trees also promote the restoration of edge habitats, prevent erosion along embankments, and contribute to establishing a healthy and stable ecosystem for wildlife.

In addition to these benefits, the existence of this type of vegetation reduces the silting of lakes and watercourses, and reduces the risk of destructive flooding due to snowmelt and free-thaw cycles.

Q: What does the dedication mean as part of the Program?
A: To raise awareness about the importance of protecting Canadian shorelines the MAJESTA brand has encouraged individuals to dedicate the trees being planted in the Trees By the Shore program. Individuals have the option of dedicating a tree to someone they care about or to themselves.

Q: Does Majesta participate in other environmental programs?
A: Yes. For more information on our commitment to managing our operations in an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible manner, visit www.MAJESTA.com
